We can use the  phrase the fact that after some linking words , some verbs , and some phrases to introduce a clause.   A clause is a group of words that includes a subject and a verb

COMMON MISTAKES : 

 Despite he was sick, he went to school.  (despite cannot be followed by a subject and verb) 

 Despite the fact that he was sick, he went to school.

We can also used a gerund after despite :   Despite being sick, he went to school.
